The current generation of Black teenagers demands radical authenticity from the media they consume. They actively seek out content that addresses the intersections of race, gender, identity, and mental health. Content creators who speak openly about therapy, anxiety, and self-care find deep resonance among Black youth, breaking long-standing cultural taboos.
While social media is a dominant force, Black teens remain avid consumers of television and film. However, their viewing habits and the industry landscape are in flux. Nielsen reports that Black audiences are powerful TV viewers, spending 46 hours and 13 minutes per week watching, compared to 35 hours for the total U.S. population, with 46% of that time spent on streaming services.
